Orchestra members are expected to abide by the following student expectations.
Attendance Policy- Musicians are expected to be present at and on time for all rehearsals and concerts and to remain
for their entire duration. Attendance is always taken. Attendance at dress rehearsals and
concerts is mandatory.
Two excused absences are allowed per semester (September--December and
January--May).
Please contact your conductor at least 5 days in advance, preferably in writing or by e-mail,
if you have to miss a rehearsal. If you are ill on rehearsal day, please leave a message on the
BRYO phone if you cannot reach your conductor. Religious holidays are excused absences but still
require that you notify your conductor in advance. If you miss a rehearsal, it is your
responsibility to find out what material was covered, including announcements; call your stand
partner or your conductor before the next rehearsal so you will be prepared.
If you are absent more than twice in a semester, your membership may be reviewed by the
conductor and the BRYO board. More than two absences per semester may be reason for exclusion
from the next concert or for dismissal from the orchestra. Two cases of tardiness will be
considered one unexcused absence. Tuition for uncompleted sessions is not refundable.
Rehearsals- BRYO rehearses once a week, on Tuesday
from 6:30-8:15 P.M. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the
start time in order to be in your seat, warmed up, and ready to begin rehearsal on time. Bring
all of your music and a no. 2 pencil with eraser to all rehearsals and concerts. Students should
be picked up on time at the end of rehearsals.
Brunswick Junior High School graciously allows BRYO to rehearse in its band room.
Please treat this facility with respect and remain within the designated rehearsal space. The
band room must be straightened and reset following the last rehearsal on Tuesday.
Rehearsals are conducted in a supportive but professional manner. It is essential that all
orchestra members pay attention, even if some sections are not playing. Part of playing in an
orchestra is learning how other parts fit in with yours. Eating, gum chewing, talking, and
otherwise disruptive behavior are not allowed during rehearsals and may constitute grounds for
dismissal.
Musical Responsibility-
Each student receives a music folder with his or her name on it at the beginning of the orchestra
season. All music, whether photocopies or originals, is the property of BRYO and must be returned
after each concert. Markings made on music must be erased before the music is turned in.
A small replacement fee may be charged for music that is lost or damaged.
Students must learn their individual music at home so that rehearsal time can be spent on musical
concepts. Parents should help their child design an effective, regular practice schedule.
We encourage students to ask their private music teacher for help with orchestra music.
BRYO cannot be responsible for damage to or loss of instruments. Students must be responsible
for their own instruments, and parents should be sure their household insurance policy provides
adequate coverage.
Concerts-
Attendance at concerts is mandatory, and members are asked to stay for the entire concert.
The following concert dress is required:
Boys: Black pants; white shirt; long, solid-color tie; dark socks; dark shoes.
Girls: Black long skirt or slacks; white blouse; dark socks or stockings;
dark shoes.
